From our case study archives: Nuclear Packaging, A Pacific Nuclear Systems Company, selected Ferralium® 255 for its ‘Enviralloy’ high integrity containers in the processing and burial of radioactive waste. The duplex alloy meets the stringent requirements of 10 CFR 61 waste stability and the states of Washington and South Carolina burial criteria.
A 25-foot drop test was used to determine suitability of alloy containers. lf the container were to suffer any loss of its contents, or even hairline cracks, it would fail. The accompanying image shows a 210 cubic foot container of Ferralium® 255 which was loaded with 10 tons of sand and dropped, successfully passing the test.
